BambooHR vs TriNet HR Plus (formerly Zenefits): an objective comparison

Updated:

BambooHR and TriNet HR Plus are both cloud-based HR systems for small and mid-sized businesses. BambooHR serves globally distributed small/mid-size teams, while TriNet HR Plus focuses on U.S. SMBs that want an integrated software-plus-service HR solution.

Backgrounds

BambooHR launched in 2008 with a clear brief: move small businesses from spreadsheets to a proper cloud HR system without the complexity of enterprise software. It has stayed focused on that segment ever since, supporting employees in more than 70 countries. Core features include a central employee database, time-off and attendance tracking, performance management, an applicant tracking system (ATS), and payroll as an optional add-on.

TriNet originated as Zenefits, which launched around 2013 as a freemium benefits administration platform aimed at small, U.S.  businesses.

After regulatory difficulties and its acquisition in 2022, Zenefits was rebranded as TriNet Zenefits and later just TriNet. The underlying platform is still the Zenefits software, now supplemented by TriNet's HR and payroll specialists. HR Plus is distinct from TriNet's PEO offering, meaning your business retains the employer relationship while outsourcing specific HR functions.

Company size and industry

BambooHR's customer base skews heavily toward small and mid-size businesses (roughly 90% by the vendor's own count), with strong representation in tech, professional services, and healthcare. Its guided setup makes it viable even for organizations buying HR software for the first time.

TriNet HR Plus targets the same SMB segment but with a firmer U.S. focus. (TriNet's parent PEO also serves U.S. businesses; international coverage exists but is not a primary selling point for HR Plus.) It suits organizations that prefer to outsource payroll and compliance rather than handle them entirely in-house.

Functionality

Core HR features

Both cover the foundational modules: a central employee database, onboarding workflows, time-off tracking, and performance management.

BambooHR's ATS is a relative strength as hiring, offers, and onboarding connect in one workflow, and users consistently rate it well. TriNet HR Plus provides recruiting through a JazzHR integration (which may carry an additional fee) and handles the full employee lifecycle through its platform.

BambooHR's workflows are more customizable, which suits organizations with specific internal processes. TriNet HR Plus applies more standardized workflows backed by certified HR professionals (useful if you want informed guidance rather than open-ended configuration).

Payroll and compliance

BambooHR now provides an optional payroll module as an add-on. It covers federal, state, and local tax filings across all 50 U.S. states and syncs directly with employee records to reduce manual entry. Compliance oversight, however, sits largely with the customer as BambooHR doesn't provide specialist guidance.

TriNet HR Plus builds payroll into its core offering and backs it with certified payroll specialists who monitor regulatory changes, handle W-2s and 1099s, manage COBRA administration, and support ACA tracking. For small HR teams managing multiple jurisdictions, that human layer handles tasks that would otherwise fall to whoever in the organization is least equipped for them.

One thing worth noting: payroll appears as a weakness in independent user reviews of both platforms, but for different reasons.

  • BambooHR users tend to cite limited payroll depth and reporting capabilities.
  • TriNet HR Plus users are more likely to flag slow response times when payroll issues arise. Neither platform is without friction here.

Benefits administration

Both systems support benefits and time-off management. BambooHR has a built-in benefits tracker and open-enrollment features, but it generally requires using your own broker and manually configuring plans.

TriNet HR Plus excels in benefits administration: it offers a shared dashboard where employees and benefits brokers can enroll and update plans via mobile or web. If you use TriNet’s insurance broker partners, their broker-fed process can fully automate enrollment (including health, dental, vision, 401(k), HSAs, etc.).

Even if you keep your own broker, the system can integrate that broker’s plans (for a nominal fee). For those who want the platform to actively support benefits administration rather than simply record it, HR Plus offers more built-in capability on this front. It's also the area where TriNet HR Plus rates most strongly in independent user reviews.

Mobile and employee self-service

BambooHR has a mobile-friendly interface for pay stub access, time-off requests, and personal information updates. TriNet HR Plus takes a more mobile-first approach: benefits enrollment, time tracking, and HR requests all run through the app. This isn't a weak point for either vendor.

Integrations and ecosystem

Both platforms are mobile-friendly; BambooHR’s app lets employees view pay stubs, request time off, and update personal information on the go. TriNet HR Plus likewise offers mobile-first functionality: users can handle PTO requests, benefits enrollment, and basic HR tasks via smartphone in the TriNet platform.

Integration-wise, BambooHR has a large marketplace of third-party apps. It connects to payroll services, time-tracking tools, recruiting sites (e.g. Indeed, LinkedIn) and collaboration apps like Slack. TriNet HR Plus supports integrations too, but TriNet’s approach often favors bundling services together (PEO, insurance, payroll, etc.) rather than many plug-and-play partners. If your organization relies heavily on a specific software stack and needs clean API connections, BambooHR gives you more flexibility.

Deployment and pricing

Both platforms are cloud-based and accessible across devices.

  • BambooHR is priced on a per-employee, per-month basis across two packages (Essentials and Advantage), with optional add-ons for payroll, time tracking, and benefits tracking. Exact pricing isn't listed publicly, so you'll need to request a quote. Annual prepayment typically unlocks better rates.
  • TriNet HR Plus also uses a flat per-employee, per-month model with clearly defined service tiers and no minimum headcount requirement. The base price covers payroll, benefits administration, COBRA, FSA support, learning management, and performance tools. Additional fees may apply for independent contractor payments, international workers, or JazzHR recruiting. Two paid add-on tiers extend the service level: Payroll Pro (dedicated payroll and payroll tax specialists) and People Pro (dedicated HR expertise, employee lifecycle guidance, and talent consulting).

Support and resources

  • BambooHR customers get access to a responsive support team via phone, email, or chat. BambooHR also provides extensive online help resources: video tutorials, community forums, webinars, and a 24/7 knowledge base. The vendor touts its award-winning 'support heroes' who are trained on the full product.
  • TriNet takes a different approach. Rather than a standard helpdesk, it assigns customers a team of certified HR and payroll specialists who handle day-to-day questions and tasks. Traditional support channels and an online help center sit alongside that team. In practice, though, independent reviews show a lower support satisfaction score: 3.9 out of 5 on Software Advice based on 823+ reviews. The dedicated-team model doesn't always translate to faster or more consistent responses.

If support reliability is a priority, BambooHR's track record on that metric is meaningfully stronger.

Alternatives

If neither option fits perfectly, there's no shortage of HRMS vendors to consider. BambooHR alternatives include platforms like Gusto (known for payroll/benefits) or Namely, as well as larger systems such as UKG Ready, ADP Workforce Now or Workday for more advanced analytics.

TriNet alternatives are generally other PEO/ASO providers; popular choices include ADP TotalSource, Paychex PEO, Justworks, Insperity, and Rippling. Each competitor has its own balance of features, pricing and service levels, so compare core HR functionality versus additional services when evaluating replacements.

Key takeaways: BambooHR or TriNet?

Choose BambooHR if you value an intuitive, employee-centric HR system and keeping things simple. Choose TriNet HR Plus if you prefer an all-in-one platform and hands-on HR/payroll support from experts.
